A. GPF has a land area of 2.7 square miles and a population of 9,764 (2000 US Census).
Q. When will I receive my Water/Sewer Bill?
A. Water/sewer bills are read and billed quarterly. The City is set up in 3 reading sections for billing purposes, with each section having a quarter ending on a different month. For example: Section A quarter ends on March 30th, Section B quarter end is on April 30th, Section C quarter end is on May 31st. Bills are mailed on the last day of the month following the quarter end date and are due by the 22nd of the next month. A 5% penalty is added to all bills not paid by the due date.
Q. How do I estimate what my taxes will be based on my assessed value?
A. First you must determine if you are receiving the fully exempt rate. Most homeowners occupy their primary residence will receive this rate. To estimate taxes take the total tax rate and multiply it by the taxable value on your Assement form and divide by 1,000.
For example: A home is assessed at $150,000 with a taxable value of $125,000. The property City tax rate that applies is the fully exempt "homestead" rate of 13.5.
$125,000 x 13.5 divided by 1,000 = $1,687.50 as the estimate for the City portion of taxes.
Q. By what date do I need to occupy a home in order to receive the homestead exemption?
A. If you occupy a home on May 1st, you are most likely eligible to receive the non-homestead exemption. If you occupy the home after May 1st, the homestead exemption will not be applied until the Following year. You can download the form from our "downloads" section.
Q. Can I obtain a Birth Certificate from the City?
A. If a birth or death originated from Cottage Hospital, certificates are available for purchase at City Hall during regular business hours. The cost is $15 for the first copy and $5 for additional copies.
Q. Where do I register to vote?
A. Residents may register to vote in person with the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall or at any Secretary of State office in Michigan. The deadline for voter registration for an election is 30 days prior to the election. In order to vote in GPF, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age, a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days and registered in GPF.
Q. How do I get into the Farms Pier Lakefront Park?
A. Pier Park entry requires a valid park pass (renewed annually on January 1st). An applications needs to be completedand returned to City Hall to be recorded and validated prior to a park pass being issued.
Q. Where do I report that my streetlights are out?
A. Streetlights are owned and maintained by DTE (formally Detroit Edison) and should be reported to DTE at 1-800-477-4747, however, we ask that you also report street light outages to our Public Safety Department 885-2100 so they can send a separate facsimile notification to DTE.
